Site Access

• Helicopter
• Station is located on cinder cone adjacent to the aptly named Fog Glacier.  Location is frequently fogged in and conditions can change within minutes from clear skies to zero visibility.  Cinder cone is surrounded on all sides by snow fields, making access, or departure from site extremely hazardous during foggy conditions.  Do not recommend being left on site without helicopter due to risk of getting stranded.
• Nearest JetA for purchase is Sand Point, which is approximates 70 miles from station, but can be difficult to get to since it requires crossing some relatively high elevation terrain to get there.  If Sand Point is inaccessible there is fuel for purchase in Cold Bay 130 miles from the station. In an emergency landing at Port Moller cannery, or Nelson Lagoon is an option and fuel is sometimes available in both of these locations, or in an emergency could be flown in via fixed wing from Cold Bay, Sand Point, or King Salmon. The 06/18 visit was coordinated with Cyrus (AVO) and based out of Chignik Bay with Egli; he had prearranged their fuel.
