USArray Station Removal Report Form V1.5

    STATION CODE: TA.C17K

STATION LOCALE DESCRIPTION: DeLong Mountains, AK

    STATION REMOVAL LOG DATE: 8/11/2020

STATION/SENSOR DOWN TIME (UTC): 1656 UTC

REMOVAL DESCRIPTION: Sensor removed, casing cutoff and plugged, hut transported from site.

ACTIONS TAKEN: Message sent to ANF indicating station removal prior to powering down. Sensor issued "remove" command, log file captured (attached). Sensor orientation measured with V2 Rods with Octans on top plate.

Sensor casing was cut off 8” below grade using the die grinder with abrasive wheels. The remaining casing was plugged at the top using an expansion plug and the hole was filled with dirt. The surrounding area was leveled and smoothed.

All antennas, conduits, soil sensor, cables, and Hut Antenna Mount were dismantled and loaded into the hut. Lithium batteries were unloaded in order to be dispersed at surrounding AON stations. The hut was transported to Lik Airstrip, then on to Kotzebue. The removed sensor was subsequently installed at C18K.

    LAT/LONG OF SENSOR HOLE: N 68.47534, W -163.17763, WAAS enabled

Distance and azimuth to Hut from Sensor hole: 245", 105 degrees

    Wind turbine: not present

Top of Casing to hole bottom with sand present: 92”

    SENSOR ORIENTATION MEASUREMENTS:

Measured with Octans Unit and rods on pin: Yes

Casing/wellcap marked with reference orientation: No

    SENSOR ORIENTATION: N 359.95 degrees

Sensor orientation from install: 0.03 degrees

COMMENTS: The scissor jack was needed to break the sensor free; it was very difficult. The sand was slightly moist, but there was no ice downhole.

    STATION Locale Description:

    STATION SERVICE LOG DATE:
    20190515

    STATION/SENSOR DOWN TIME (UTC):
Station comms restored at ~0000 UTC on May 16, 2019

    SERVICE DESCRIPTION:
Site's BGAN terminal went offline on 4/5/2019. XI-202 data from the site indicated it was powered and running normally. Solar charging appeared to be weak at the site compared to nearby stations.

    UPON ARRIVAL:
The site had been damaged by a bear. The middle solar panel had been pulled off of the hut. The BGAN and MET cables had been severed. The BGAN antenna N connector had been damaged when the BGAN cable was pulled on by the bear. The sensor cable conduit and wellcap did not appear to be disturbed.

    ACTIONS TAKEN:
    Replaced BGAN antenna cable
    Replaced BGAN antenna
    Replaced WXT cable
    Replaced VIE
Moved lower solar panel up so it's now in the middle position
Downloaded the soil probe data and replaced the batteries

    WXT cable

    COMMENTS:
Once the new WXT cable was installed, the original WXT failed to make a chirping noise. We used Willard to verify that the WXT was not recognized by the QEP. We connected to the WXT with a USB cable and verified that the unit had the correct communication port settings. We then installed a new WXT536 but it too failed to make a chirping noise and was not recognized by the QEP. We tried a different WXT cable but this made no difference. We then tried a different VIE and once the WXT was connected to the new VIE it immediately started chirping and was recognized by the QEP. The original VIE had been working with the original WXT until the site was damaged by the bear. It's possible that the QEP was damaged when the WXT cable was severed by the bear (perhaps the cable was damaged in a way that connected the power and ground wires and resulted in damage to the QEP). The new G5 VIE was installed and the original WXT from the site was reinstalled.

The remains of the destroyed solar panel and its aluminum frame were put into the hut.
