Station Notes

  • Adopted by the AEC
  • The site is a sited on NPS land in the Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve on the north side of Coal Creek mining camp at the old water tank location.

  • The site is a 5-10 minute walk from the air strip and up a steep hill. It's a tough walk if you are carrying a lot of weight. NPS staff have provided ATV rides from the airstrip to the base of the steep hill in the past. Large amounts of equipment are most easily moved to the site via helicopter sling load with a long line

    SERVICE DESCRIPTION:

Upgrades to comms power controlling and distribution

    Add weather station

    Swap VIE and router

    UPON ARRIVAL:

Station in very good condition. NPS told said that we were among the first people out at Coal Creek this year, so there were no guarantees the airstrip would be landable. It was perfectly dry and level. We also had some concern about bears in the area, but we only saw sign of moose, wolf, beaver, and bunny on the 1/4 mile walk to the station.

    ACTIONS TAKEN:

Swap upper portion of the Hut Antenna Mount. The old mount didn't have secondary nipples to accommodate an external GPS antenna.

Swap LinkSys router for a Mikrotik, same network info, 67.47.8.102/30. Change power distribution blocks inside comms box to include blocking diodes. Omron solid state timer set to 1 hour ON/4 hours OFF. Add necessary components onto Hut panel, including a Crydom solid state relay, to allow for DC VSAT power control via XI-202.

Add Vaisala WXT536 and standard Weather Station Mount. Move GPS outside.

VIE was swapped due to possible lack of QEP jumpers. Initially there was no response from the Vaisala on the EP page in Willard. After some troubleshooting, and due to a fortunate coincidence of working with Vaisalas recently in the lab, it was determined that the protocol/baud rate on the Vaisala was set to RS232 at 19200, instead of SDI12. Once the change was made via the service port on the Vaisala, the weather station information populated on the EP page almost immediately.
